Large variations in global irrigation withdrawals caused by uncertain irrigation efficiencies

چکیده
Abstract An assessment of the human impact on global water cycle requires estimating volume withdrawn for irrigated agriculture. A key parameter in this calculation is irrigation efficiency, which corrects fraction lost between withdrawals and crop due to management, distribution or conveyance losses. Here we show that efficiency used models flawed it overlooks ambiguities partial efficiencies, technologies, definition ‘large-scale’ areas managerial factors. Once accounted for, these uncertainties can make withdrawal estimates fluctuate by more than one order magnitude at country level. Such variability larger leads extreme values caused related with climate change. Our results highlight need embrace deep prevent design shortsighted policies river basin-water-agricultural interface.

Burkholderia pseudomallei in the tropics. A cluster of 5 cutaneous melioidosis cases occurred in suburban southwest Australia after an earlier case in January 2012. We collected environmental samples at the first patient’s home in January 2012 and from a nearby health center in December 2013 after 2 new cases occurred in the same postal district. We isolated genotypically identical B. pseudomal...
متن کاملValue of irrigation water with uncertain future rain: A simulation case study of sugarcane irrigation in northern Australia
[1] Using sugarcane as a case study, this paper shows how an agronomic model can be used to estimate the marginal value of stored irrigation water with uncertain future rain. We do this by estimating production functions that have the water available for use as the variable factor of production (referring to them as allocation production functions). These differ from more ‘‘traditional’’ produc...
متن کاملDecentralization and Economic Incentives to Manage Groundwater Withdrawals for Irrigation: from Theory to Practice
France is currently embarking upon a drastic reform of quantitative water resources management. This reform relies on two principles: the definition of an upper limit to water abstraction per water body and the decentralization of the responsibility for allocating water among users, in particular in the agricultural sector. This paper looks at possible institutional arrangements and incentive-b...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the safety and efficacy of the OtoClear Safe Irrigation System for removing cerumen from the external auditory canal in children. METHODS Eligible subjects were 6 months-17 years of age with cerumen obstructing > or = 50% of the tympanic membrane (TM) from view (by otoscopy). Pneumatic otoscopy, tympanometry, and audiometry were performed followed by cleansing of the aff...
متن کاملIrrigation Uniformity
I ncreasing production efficiency is becoming a major theme for producers in order to maintain or increase their economic return in an increasingly competitive global market. In the case of irrigated agriculture, producers must also address increasing public concern about water conservation, water quality, and environmental protection. Two irrigation management issues require attention in order...
